Each negotiation cycle about a next European Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) was confronted with increasing tasks and growing challenges for the EU ahead. The discussions about adapting priorities, reviewing funding mechanisms and above all the total budget have had diverse outcomes, always with room for improvement. This time around the pressure for the next MFF negotiations has further increased in a politically even more challenging context. The outlook for an ambitious EU budget project in critical times is all the more uncertain.

After the European Commission publishes its proposal for the next MFF beginning of May we would like to discuss what the progressive priorities should be for the negotiations to come. What to do we want the EU being able to do? How much are we willing to invest in a European Union capable of facing the challenges ahead and better keeping its promise of prosperity for its citizens as well as being a credible international actor?
