The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is the most far-reaching international project of the People‘s Republic of China since its founding in 1949.

A new policy report by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) presents an analysis of the security implications of the BRI‘s sea-based component, the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (the ‘Road’). For two strategic maritime spaces that it crosses, the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean Region, the report gives special consideration to how the European Union‘s security interests may be affected by the Road and how it should respond to this.

The report complements the 2017 FES-SIPRI publication on the land-based component of the BRI, the Silk Road Economic Belt (the ‘Belt‘). The previous report examined security implications in Central Asia and South Asia, two strategic terrestrial regions that the Belt traverses.
