There is currently no dialogue taking place between the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) beyond low-level technical talks. However, increased economic connectivity between the unions could bring benefits to both. This would also end a dangerous competition for the states “in-between” and enable Russia to re-engage as part of a multilateral platform. Many of the states located between the EU and Russia are interested in fostering good economic relations with both players, as their trade flows demonstrate. This is particularly the case with Armenia: a traditional ally of Russia, the country is a member of the EEU but recently signed a Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the EU – one of its main trading partners. Our seminar will discuss the advantages as well as the challenges of potential cooperation between the EU and the EEU, and the prospects for increased economic connectivity in the Eurasian space.
