With a delay of 18 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic the AU-EU summit finally took place on 17 and 18 February 2022. During this period leading to the summit, the partnership was once more put to the test not least due to the lack of European commitment with regard to vaccines for the African continent. Expectations on both sides were high. Next to health security, other pressing issues were on the agenda such as migration and how to match EU’s push for climate change and green transition with Africa’s economic and industrial aspirations. Although the joint declaration has set ambitious goals on a wide range of issues these commitments need to be followed up by action, sufficient funding and above all political will.

With our speakers we would like to recap the AU-EU summit and discuss how to move the partnership forward. Is there now a truly shared vision which needs to become operational? What challenges are we still facing to advance the partnership? What are the most pressing areas of cooperation? What impact does the ongoing war in Ukraine have on EU-Africa cooperation?

This online roundtable on Africa-EU relations is co-hosted by Dr Joachim Schuster, MEP and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.

English-German interpretation will be provided.
