Workshop: Democratising EU Economic Governance

After a long period of reflection and negotiation, the European Commission has finally presented its legislative proposals for a reform of EU economic governance in spring 2023. The reform will set the new framework for Member States’ fiscal policy and will thus critically shape their room for investments and social spending in crisis-ridden times of rapid transformation.

The reform is a unique opportunity to address the current lack of procedures of democratic accountability, and enhance democracy in EU economic policy coordination. In a study commissioned by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Mark Dawson, Professor of European Law and Governance at the Hertie School of Governance, scrutinises these deficits and offers proposals for more democratic control.

On 6 September, 17-19:00 CEST, the author will present the study "How to Democratise Europe's Fiscal Rules: Proposals for Reforming the EU's Economic Governance Package", followed by a discussion with experts and policymakers.
