The long-expected Conference on the Future of Europe will start soon. It aims to offer a new European forum for an open debate with citizens around several key priorities and challenges. One of the major issues is the future of European democracy, including EU’s institutional set-up, the power of the European Parliament, the role of EU citizens in decision making on the European level as well as the fight against illiberalism and new ways to enhance the rule of law in member states. For this reason, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung already organized several Trans-European virtual conferences to discuss progressive ideas for shaping the future of European Democracy. Over 60 participants from a dozen countries took part in our online workshops and drafted a “Progressive Manifesto for European Democracy”.
At our launch event, FES president Martin Schulz will hold a keynote speech on the Conference on the Future of Europe followed by two panel discussions on “Enhancing Parliamentary and Participatory Democracy” and “Strengthening the Rule of Law in Europe” in the context of the proposals from the Progressive Manifesto.
