Consensus paper presentation: A shared Social Democratic approach to Eastern Europe

On 18 March, we will present the new consensus paper "Shaping the Zeitenwende" in Brussels.

After the launch of military aggression against Ukraine, a shared Social Democratic Eastern Policy is needed

What does "Zeitenwende" actually mean for Social Democrats in Europe? After the launch of military aggression against Ukraine, a shared Social Democratic Eastern Policy is needed. It can only be initiated in close cooperation with partners from the Baltic States and Central Eastern Europe, Germany and the Nordic Countries because of their proximity to the Eastern border of the NATO and the EU. Against this background, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung convened representatives from these countries to discuss their perspectives in various workshops between March 2023 and May 2024. The result is a consensus paper reflecting a shared view, avoiding the pitfall of criticizing (or endorsing) particular national policies towards Russia, Ukraine or other states of the region.

On 18 March, we will bring together members of this group and authors of the paper to present their key considerations for a shared Social Democratic Eastern Policy. We wil also discuss how these could fit into a social democratic roadmap. To assess the findings against the background of the new European Commission and the new US administration, we will exchange with European Social Democrats as well as selected representatives of EU institutions and Brussels-based think tanks.

Participation is possible upon invitation only. For more information, please contact Sidonie Wetzig, our Policy Officer for Foreign Affairs, Security and Defence Policy: Sidonie.Wetzig(at)fes.de
