22. - 25.10.2018, closed dialogue programme

When irregular migration to the EU increased dramatically in 2015, it was civil society and volunteers that played a major role in managing the resulting logistical and social challenges. However, civil society actors can do more than supply infrastructure and people in a crisis situation. They can also be involved in a more long-term way by engaging the broader public in the dialogue about the topic within the member states, across the EU and with third countries. The international network of labour unions can be an effective tool for establishing an open dialogue on legal migration and addressing the root causes of migration within a multilateral approach. It is under this premise that the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung EU Office invites representatives of the Trade Union Network for Mediterranean and Sub-Saharan Migration (RSMMS) to a dialogue programme in Brussels in order to discuss trade unions’ potential role with representatives of the European Institutions, Brussels-based NGOs and other experts.
