A new study by FES and the DGB provides answers. Tuesday, 02.09.2025 Event News Policy Conference: A clean, just, and competitive European Industry Competitiveness is currently the Commission's top priority. On 24 September, policymakers and experts are invited to discuss what efforts towards this goal should look like and how they fit in with industrial policy. © picture alliance / Science Photo Library | FANATIC STUDIO Economic policy in Germany and across Europe faces a twofold challenge today that resembles a turbulent dating market for countries: to restructure their economies in the face of the climate crisis, both Germany and the EU must win over trading partners to secure essential resources and technologies. At the same time, these efforts are complicated by a world trading system in upheaval, marked by geo-economic competition and coercive behaviour by major powers. In this new context, it is more crucial than ever that Germany and the EU make attractive offers to countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In response to these challenges, FES, in collaboration with the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), has published the study “Competitive International Partnerships”, which examines how Germany and the EU can respond to changing trade dynamics and supply chains. It outlines a roadmap for Europe's international engagement that not only seeks market access but also supports local value chains in partner countries. Presentation and discussion Mark your calendars for 25 September 2025 from 14:30-16:00 at the FES EU Office to discuss the study’s findings and strategies with co-author and analyst Cédric Koch, Udo Bullmann, Member of the European Parliament and Prof. Marta Carinho, University of Rio de Janeiro. The registration for this event is closed. For further information, please contact our Policy Officer for Trade & International Cooperation Daniela Iller: Daniela.Iller(at)fes.de.
