Peace and security are at the heart of the Feminist Foreign Policy adopted by many EU Member States. Yet they have recently also increased their budget on defence. Can these notions be reconciled? Explore the question in our new policy brief.
A core demand of feminist movements is the focus on peace and conflict resolution as opposed to hard security. This includes calls from demilitarisation to pacifism. Several EU Member States are committed to feminist foreign policy (FFP), yet have recently increased their defence budget. Can these contradictory developments be reconciled?
In order to answer this question, our new policy brief examines how to look at security and defence strategies through a feminist lens. Dr. Annika Bergman Rosamond highlights how Member States integrate the principles of peace and security into their respective FFP strategies and formulates recommendations for a more feminist approach to EU Security and Defence Policy.
In the context of evolving geopolitical dynamics, upholding a values-based foreign policy and embedding feminist considerations and practices into the transformation of the EU’s foreign and security agenda is more crucial than ever.
