Democratic Consolidation and Geopolitical Re-Orientation?

On 7 June, Armenia held parliamentary elections in what was widely seen as a consequential vote on its future path and geopolitical orientation. Although the campaign was highly polarised, the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission found that the elections were well organised, inclusive and offered voters clear political alternatives.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party secured victory on a pro-peace and pro-European course. Whilst Armenia is likely to continue moving closer to the EU, its relations with neighbouring countries will also have to be considered.

Roundtable Discussion on 30 June

  • What do the election results mean for the peace process and for democracy in Armenia?
  • Will Pashinyan’s victory lead to further rapprochement with the EU?
  • And how will Armenia strike a balance in its relations with the EU and neighbours like Turkey, Azerbaijan and Russia?

We will discuss these and more questions with our experts:

  • Tigran Grigoryan, Director of Regional Center for Democracy and Security
  • Mane Adamyan, Consultant, Former advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister, Former Deputy Minister of Economy
  • Armen Sahakyan, Country Director, Armenian National Assembly of America
